Rosacea Treatments La Jolla

Rosacea, or adult acne, is an inflammatory process that may cause your face to have redness, pimples, or sensitive skin. As an adult, such a condition may cause embarrassment, frustration, or have social and business consequences. Dr. Darrell Gonzales has special expertise in the medical and cosmetic rosacea treatments offered at his La Jolla dermatology practice.

Rosacea is a common skin disease that affects more than 14 million American adults. Sometimes called “adult acne,” rosacea is a progressive and cyclic inflammatory process that causes redness and pimples on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. In addition to the small red bumps, patients may also develop vascular rosacea caused by the formation of small fixed blood vessels on their nose and cheeks called telangiectasias. These small blood vessels cause a chronic, red-flushing discoloration of a rosacea individual’s complexion.

Rosacea often flares when something causes the blood vessels in the face to expand. Things that cause a flare-up are called triggers. Common triggers are exercise, sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths. Swings in temperature from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause a flare-up of rosacea. If untreated, rosacea may progress and lead to significant redness on the face, disfiguring acne-type bumps, and a red, bulbous nose. Unfortunately, many patients do not recognize the signs of rosacea before permanent changes occur.
